On Bookstores
What’s in it for bookstores—aren’t they trying to sell books, not give them away?
We hope that readers will support independent bookstores by actually buying another book or two while they’re there getting a Concord Free Press book for free. In a way, we help ensure that a second book is effectively 50% off.
Why are you only distributing your books via independent stores?
We love all bookstores. But we love independent bookstores a little more, since they’re local, integrated in the community, and the kind of places where people still care about reading. We received early, strong support from the New England Independent Booksellers Association, which includes some of the best bookstores in America. Our flagship store is the Concord Bookshop in historic Concord, Massachusetts, our hometown. And we have more than 60 other great stores participating throughout the US. And one in Canada!
This recent note from one of our stores sums up why stores like the Concord Free Press:
All of our copies of your latest book are gone now. At first, people couldn't believe that book was free. They were hesitant and tried paying for it. We kept explaining the deal and word got out and before Saturday night was over, they were gone. You should know that people's reaction to the whole idea -- the free book, the donation, passing it on -- was remarkable to witness. They were excited, enthused and simply amazed to be a part of it. From my standpoint, it was incredible to see their faces as they gave me their reaction to the idea. Anyway, thought that I'd let you know how it went. Thanks for bringing us on board, it's an honor.
